Our CEO and Principal Consultant
Melissa Ross Owner, CEO, and Principal Consultant
Welcome and thank you for your interest in our business! I would like to start by saying this is the first step toward making your business and its management staff more knowledgeable in understanding Worker’s Compensation from an internal aspect as well as making decisions that can potentially impact your company financially in a way that you are able to see the results of your (ROI) return on investments. Some of those investments involve choosing a (TPA) Third-Party Administrator or an (MCO) Managed Care Organization as well as the BWC programs you choose to enroll in and their processes.
As an Account Manager with over 20 years of experience working, managing, and consulting with clients in the TPA world I discovered in my business relationships with my clients they were lacking knowledge of how they should be handling things internally from a management role. There were clients in H.R. roles, safety management roles, and risk management roles, new business owners or out-of-state owners that knew little or nothing at all about making decisions for Worker’s Compensation. The love and passion of what I do drove us to where we are today. We wanted to be able to provide a tool for all employers throughout the state of Ohio so they can rely on their own decisions and understand the processes of the State of Ohio Bureau of Worker’s Compensation.
Ohio is a Monopolistic State for Worker’s Compensation insurance, which only allows worker’s compensation coverage through the Bureau of Worker’s Compensation (BWC). Buying Worker’s Compensation from private insurance is not allowed and there are certain policies that an employer must be compliant with to keep that coverage effective. Failure to adhere to the requirements can cost the employer more money which would impact their premiums paid to the BWC.
My expertise and experience:
-
Over 20 years of hands-on experience with the administration and consulting of Worker’s Compensation.
-
Working with Fortune 500 companies directing and leading on strategies for effective claims management.
-
My client base involves over 200 State Funded companies throughout the state of Ohio with a separate business relationship catered to Self-Insured employers, for claims administration with consulting.

-
BWC training on creating a culture of safety, key strategies in safety management, and continuous development related to the workplace.
-
Training in ways to create effective strategies on collaboration and innovation, development of wellness plans, and implementation of policies within the employee handbook.
-
BWC training to help leadership with being more proficient with safety and leading safety in the workplace.
-
BWC training on educating the workforce, being committed and consistent with implementing the requirement to ensure a level of satisfaction from the management staff and employees within the workplace.
-
Extensive experience in Benefits administration for FMLA regulations, short-term disability, and long-term disability.
-
Over 25 years of experience with the ability to develop and nurture long-term business relationships.
-
30 years of expertise-based background in customer service.
Although my credentials are practical in nature they cannot convey my eagerness, devotion, and commitment to serve you as a client and to help your staff grow in learning the detailed fundamentals in the Worker’s Compensation world.

Key Strategies for Managing Claims Internally
Effectively managing worker's compensation claims internally is essential for minimizing costs, ensuring compliance, and maintaining open communication with all relevant parties.
Key strategies when handling claims within your organization:
Consistent Communication with TPA, MCO, BWC, and Providers:Maintaining consistent communication with Third-Party Administrators (TPAs), Managed Care Organizations (MCOs),
the Bureau of Workers' Compensation (BWC), and healthcare providers is crucial. Establish clear lines of communication to facilitate prompt updates on claim status, treatment progress, and any changes in work restrictions. Consistency in communication ensures that all parties are well-informed and can coordinate efforts effectively.
Consistent Communication with Management Staff and Injured Workers:
Effective communication with both management staff and injured workers is vital throughout the claim management process. Establish clear channels of communication to keep management staff updated on claim progress, return-to-work plans, and any required accommodations. Regularly communicate with injured workers to provide support, address concerns, and keep them informed about the claim's progress and available resources.
Accurate Documentation Management:
Maintain comprehensive documentation throughout the claim process. This includes records related to work status, Medco-14 forms, accommodations for light duty work, salary continuation payments, updates on treatment progress, and doctor's appointments. Documenting interactions and activities related to the claim helps ensure compliance, facilitates effective communication, and provides a clear record of actions taken.
Responding to BWC Due Diligence Letters:
The BWC may send due diligence letters requesting additional information or documentation related to a claim. It is crucial to respond promptly and thoroughly to these letters, providing the requested information within the specified timeframe. Responding in a timely and accurate manner demonstrates cooperation and compliance, preventing delays or potential complications in the claim process.
Understanding Worker's Compensation Policy and Workplace Policies:
A solid understanding of the Worker's Compensation policy and how it applies to your company's workplace policies is essential. Align your internal policies with the requirements and regulations set forth by the BWC to ensure compliance. Regularly review and update policies to reflect any changes in legislation or best practices, providing clarity and guidance for management staff and employees alike.
Appropriate Termination of Employment:
In certain cases, termination of employment may be appropriate due to various factors, such as non-compliance, fraudulent claims, or inability to accommodate work restrictions. When termination is necessary, ensure it is executed in accordance with applicable laws, company policies, and proper documentation. Consulting legal counsel or HR professionals can help ensure a smooth and compliant termination process.
